Look how far sofas have come...

Just like today, sofas have been very useful decades and centuries ago too. In fact, they’re first believed to have been used in 2000 BC in Egypt. Rather than being found in nearly every home or business in the country, they were instead reserved for royalty, and this remained the case for hundreds of years, even when sofas were used in different cultures, such as by the Romans.

Although the early name for sofas roughly translates as bench, some designs were exceptionally opulent, reflecting the expectations of the people that used them - which is very important when it comes to furniture designs even to this day! As houses become more solid, householders moved from using tapestry and large carpets for comfort, to purchasing soft seating, but it could still prove very expensive to those with average budgets.

Designs to match your budget

This all began to change around the 15th Century when more designs were produced that varied in cost and by the 18th Century manufacturers were really starting to make their name in the industry. Machinery and innovative materials meant that as the years went by there was even more choice when it came to designs and price, and in 1928 a particular chair hit the market - and hasn’t really gone away… Called the Grand Confort and designed by Charlotte Perriand, this was the first type of corbusier produced.
