They were installed by Frenchman Nadar, who set them up around the landing site of his huge hot air balloon. Also a photographer, the intrepid explorer set off from France to Brussels in the balloon and wanted to make sure no one was injured along the way. The crowd safety barriers are still called Nadar barriers in some locations, showing the impact they had at the time and into the future.
